The master plan for Aberdeen’s revitalization, aims to create a vibrant, culturally rich waterfront that connects Ap Lei Chau with the community, with a vision to develop attractive public spaces that honor the fishing village heritage while improving accessibility and promoting tourism. Key objectives include creating a welcoming promenade, preserving cultural identities, and enhancing transportation connections. By creating Aberdeen-style outdoor dining areas as cultural hubs as design strategies, the approach aims to facilitate accessibility, celebrate cultural identity and ensure a seamless and immersive experience for both residents and visitors.
The detailed design focuses on the Aberdeen Fish Market, a three-storey complex with a pedestrian bridge and ramp leading to a rooftop garden, connected to the Ap Lei Chau wind tower. The market is clad in natural wood to evoke traditional boats, emphasizing community ties and fishing village memories. The theme, AP-ERDEEN: NET・EAT・GO, reinforces the physical and social integration between Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau.
Inspired by Japanese fish markets, the redesign includes seafood wholesale, restaurants and retail, offering a fresh, sea-to-table dining experience and savory souvenirs sale. The planting design focuses on ornamental trees and shrubs to create a year-round flowering park, providing a relaxing and attractive space for everyone.
