Urbanevate – Redefining MTR Ventilation Shafts as Local Community Landmarks

In the urban areas of Hong Kong and Kowloon, the presence of enormous and unsightly concrete ventilation shafts for the MTR subway system is unmistakable. Positioned between streets and buildings, these geometric structures follow the layout of the four MTR urban lines, often lacking aesthetic consideration or integration with their surroundings. However, as discussions arise regarding their design, there is an opportunity to transform these ventilation shafts into more than just functional objects. By considering their brutalist exteriors, locations, and nearby context, these structures have the potential to enhance the cityscape, foster community connections, and provide much-needed open spaces. Viewing them as a collective system, this project envisions assigning a new role to the ventilation shafts on Hong Kong Island, representing the local development history of different districts and becoming storytellers that reconnect dispersed areas. Incorporating wind as a prominent design element, the new ventilation shafts would intake fresh air and feature transparent designs, respecting existing structures while introducing new ones inspired by the brutalist aesthetic. Each site, including Sheung Wan, Causeway Bay, Tai Hang, Sai Wan Ho, and Shau Kei Wan, would host wind installations that connect with local history and serve as reminders of the urban pulse and continuous energy supply. This project aims to demonstrate the potential for improved ventilation facilities design, while simultaneously addressing the need for open spaces and enhancing community identity across Hong Kong Island.
