"It started with transforming living room rugs into landscapes, imagining myself as a mini-figure navigating uncharted terrains. Today, as a landscape architecture graduate, my canvas has grown, but the sense of discovery remains unchanged. For me, landscape architecture is the mediation between reality and imagination. It attunes us to neglected necessities: beauty, function, and belonging. It requires rigorous scientific and ecological thinking at the macro scale, yet thrives on the intimacy of a single human footstep. I believe a compassionate project demands empathy first as a condition of thought, then as a method for making."

The project redesigns Brick Hill at Hong Kong Ocean Park as a “Safari Play” zone centered on animal welfare and visitor experiences with nature. Located at the middle of the park, the area remains undeveloped and is only visible to visitors via cable car. The design transforms Ocean Park’s artificial environment into a natural experience by integrating the existing space with a naturalistic approach.

The visitor program integrates seamlessly into the day-time and night-time safari journey. Historical narratives of Brick Hill are woven in through sand play and paving elements. The overall design builds upon these five foundational habitats. To enhance biodiversity, eight design strategies were proposed, along with co-habitation of compatible species to improve animal welfare. Multiple green barriers were designed for various targeted animals, ensuring that native species are protected from invasion while allowing the animals within the park to live safely.

Zooming in, the overall detailed design concept was to create a peak landscape of flowing, curvilinear forms evocative of a natural scene, including planting scheme and paving, which yields a feeling of energy and movement that is rhythmic and pulsating.
