For You is an 11-minute social realist microfilm that examines the phenomena of “refined internal friction” and emotional labour among contemporary urban youth. Through the recurring visual metaphor of an automatic vacuum sealer, the film critiques how intergenerational expectations and corporate norms erode individual subjectivity.
Everyday objects—such as homemade dumplings sent by family, formal corporate invitations, and self-improvement checklists—are recontextualised as instruments of subtle discipline and psychological control. As familial care and professional aspirations become mechanisms of regulation, the protagonist, Xiaoyu, reaches a psychological breaking point.
Rather than adhering to a conventional victim narrative, the film interrogates the dynamics of “invisible control” embedded within both family and workplace structures. It ultimately suggests that authentic existence lies in embracing the disorder and “oxidation” of life, resisting the pressure to conform to a sanitised and pre-determined ideal. The work invites audiences to critically reflect on the coercive dimensions that may underlie seemingly well-intentioned forms of care and guidance.
